Barbie maker Mattel released the special-edition doll in the 43-year-old Ava Duvernay Selma director’s likeness at Variety Magazine’s Power of Women Luncheon, which celebrated modern-day”sheroes,” according to the New York Daily News.
The Barbies were originally created as one-of-a-kind pieces to be auctioned off by the celebs to benefit the charity of their choice.
But after fans took to social media expressing a desire to buy their own “#AvaBarbie,” Mattel made the doll available for sale on its website.
As we all know from the #PattiPieFamine that we’re still enduring from Thanksgiving, if you can sell something to Black Twitter, then you have one hell of a product. But when you realize that you’re the one whose selling like hotcakes, it’s still surprising. Ava took to Twitter to express some of her shock.

If you wanted to get an Ava DuVernay doll for your kiddo today, then you may be too little too late. According to The Hollywood Reporter,
Ava Barbie was indeed (briefly) available at Amazon — for pre-order. Selling for $65, the online retailer announced the doll would be released Jan. 1.
But even pre-order availability was short-lived, with Amazon selling out almost as quickly as Mattel had.
Whatever you do, don’t get too hungry for a Barbie. You know the Ebay sharks are out there selling dolls at marked up prices — $350 a pop!
