The annual Houston Caribbean Carnival has grown into one of the nations most attended multicultural festivals during the summer. The event traditionally takes place during the fourth of July weekend. This year’s festivities was marked with tragedy as revelers attending the annual Jouvert (Paint,Mud,and Water) fete, was abruptly interrupted by gunfire, which left party goers scrambling for cover. Four men are injured, two women were trampled in the meele trying to leave the scene, the shooter is still at large. Many Caribbean festivals are safe, especially in the Southern states, such as Atlanta and Miami. However, this year’s surrounding events did not have adequate security, which created the opportunity for this tragic turn of events. There’s no real idea of what went wrong last night, how someone was allowed to bring a gun inside of a venue that held 5,000 people trying to party on the Fourth of July. There are reports of their being outside security and off-duty police officers but none of the 30 or so that were hired were inside the venue when the shooting took place.

Atlanta Daily Journal reports: Media maven Princess Dalton-Lofters summed up the sentiments and prestige of the Caribbean Amercicans honorees on hand — a woman who achieved great success in the male-dominated industry by creating and producing the “Real Housewives of Atlanta.”
“I’m a little overwhelmed. I was born in Jamaica and raised in Canada and now living in the U.S. The one thing that I do wanna say is that it is definitely … being born in Jamaica, being West Indian, has made me who I am,” she said. “I was raised with a certain set of values and mores and was built to make it in this industry. Growing up in Jamaica and then Canada and my parents being West Indian, they instilled in me to be who I wanted to be and to do what I wanted to do. And those who know me understand that I do not take ‘no’ for an answer, or that ‘can’t’ is something that I never embraced. I always embraced dreaming big and going after your goals.
“And I got a lot of ‘no’s’ along the way, and it took that drive in me that I attribute to be me being Jamaican and West Indian to make it in this industry. And for someone like me who has made it, I just encourage young women to follow their dreams (and) never, never, never take ‘no’ for an answer and to always go after what you want,” Dalton-Lofters continued. “Because, believe me, if you can dream it, it will happen.”

It seems that Apollo Nida is going back to jail, for a possible 30 years. Apollo Nida pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to commit mail, wire and bank fraud.
This is a shocker, Phadera Parks admitted that her husband was incident until proven guilty. It seems that it may have been the opposite.
An official statement Justice.gov: Apollo E. Nida has pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit mail, wire and bank fraud in a complex scheme spanning over four years, harming over 50 victims, and causing over $2.3 million in losses.
“This defendant participated in a sweeping fraud scheme that exploited many segments of the financial system, including phony claims submitted to federal and state agencies, loans secured by vehicles, and even basic identity theft associated with stolen checks,” said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. “The extensive nature of the fraud is unfortunate and breathtaking. Prosecutions like this case help to highlight the vulnerabilities in the financial system, so that we can prevent future schemes and protect our citizens and government agencies from theft like this.”
“Nida and his conspirators were conniving and creative in their scheme to steal victims’ identities and defraud them. The United States Secret Service will continue to adapt its investigative methodologies to arrest criminals who use their technological savvy to violate unsuspecting victims such as those in this case,” said Reginald G. Moore, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, Atlanta Field Office.
“Many everyday citizens, legitimate businesses and taxpayers have been victimized by this complicated and long running fraudulent scheme. After an intensive investigation with the cooperation of federal, state and local law enforcement, we are very pleased to at long last see this criminal brought to justice,” said John D. Sours, Administrator, Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection.
According to United States Attorney Yates, the charges and other information presented in court: Beginning in August 2009, Nida, 35, of Atlanta, Ga., and others conspired to commit mail, wire, and bank fraud. The conspirators obtained stolen checks by stealing them or buying them from other criminal associates. The stolen checks involved in the scheme included United States Treasury Checks, as well as checks stolen from the pension fund of Delta Airlines. Additionally, the conspirators obtained funds by filing fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service and making fraudulent claims against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and at least eleven states, all in the names of victims whose identities had been stolen.
Many of these checks were mailed to a large network of mailboxes rented by the conspirators at UPS Stores in the Northern District of Georgia and throughout the nation, for eventual forwarding to the conspirators. The conspirators also obtained fraudulent auto loans secured by vehicles that they had no ownership interest in whatsoever. To convince banks to issue these loans, Nida and his conspirators created fake documents and websites appearing to belong to legitimate auto dealerships.
Once the conspirators obtained the stolen checks, they laundered them through numerous victim financial institutions. Often, the conspirators laundered the checks by opening bank accounts in the names of the payees listed on the face of the checks. This involved impersonating each payee and stealing his or her identity. The conspirators prepared for these impersonations by researching their victims using databases like LexisNexis and Equifax, to which they obtained access through fake collection agencies they had opened as part of the scheme. Sometimes, the conspirators negotiated checks by laundering them in bulk through accounts which appeared to belong to legitimate businesses, such as one in the name “Signature Tax Collections.”
The illegal conduct ended only when agents of the U.S. Secret Service confronted Nida and seized his laptop computer, pursuant to a search warrant, on September 13, 2013.
Assistant United States Attorney Alana R. Black is prosecuting the case.
This case is being investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection.

A groom flying from Atlanta to Costa Rica forced his Delta Air Lines flight to divert to the Cayman Islands after he got into a “drunken argument” with his new wife en route to their honeymoon, Reuters reports.
The incident was bad enough that the flight’s crew opted to divert and make an emergency landing on Grand Cayman Island on Sunday.
The man was escorted from the flight and taken into custody by Cayman Islands police, but the bride remained on the aircraft and ultimately continued on with her trip to the Costa Rican capital of San Jose.
Royal Cayman Islands Chief Inspector Raymond Christian would not identify the couple’s identity to Reuters, but did acknowledge that the man who was taken into custody is a U.S. citizen.
Reuters says the man was being held Monday in the Cayman Islands on a charge of drunk and disorderly conduct. Christian indicated he could face additional charges.
Delta spokeswoman Lindsay McDuff confirmed the incident to Reuters, saying the crew operating Delta Flight 901 decided to divert to Grand Cayman because of a “disruptive customer.”
“The flight landed without incident and the customer was met by local authorities,” McDuff adds to Reuters.
A middle school principal in Atlanta, Ga., has resigned after allegations surfaced that he had sex with a teacher inside of the school building, dated a student’s parent, and never punished a custodian who sold marijuana to students.
The Atlanta Constitution Reports: An Atlanta middle school principal had an in-school affair with a teacher and failed to look into rumors that a custodian was selling marijuana to sixth graders, according to the results of an internal school system investigation.
Kelvin Griffin, who resigned as principal of Young Middle School in west Atlanta on Friday, said Thursday the allegations are false.
“I never had an inappropriate relationship with a teacher and I never condoned anybody selling drugs to my students in my school, and I was never aware that was taking place,” he said in a phone interview.
The Feb. 21 investigative report, obtained by The AtlantaJournal-Constitution through an open records request, concludes that Griffin violated policies prohibiting romantic relationships with subordinates, and that he didn’t maintain a drug-free school environment.
The report also found that Griffin had an inappropriate romantic relationship with a parent who was volunteering at the school, and that he allowed a non-certified teacher to administer a teacher effectiveness survey to students.
Griffin and the teacher locked themselves in her office and didn’t answer the door when an assistant principal knocked, according to the report. Security video footage showed the teacher checking to make sure the hallway was clear before waving Griffin to come out.
The custodian was arrested last year for possession of marijuana on campus after a school resource officer saw paraphernalia in the custodian’s car, the report said.
Griffin said he’s talking with attorneys to find out what his options are.
“All of it is rumors and innuendos, all of it,” he said. “Disgruntled employees started rumors that got out of hand.”
The report said Griffin told investigators he acknowledged he should have looked into rumors that the custodian was selling drugs.
