Michael Brown Exhibit Creates Controversy

Madd News powered by Caribbean Media Network

A life-size depiction of the Michael Brown crime scene following his death is at the center of a new Chicago art exhibit.

The controversial piece, has many upset. It  features  a life-like portrayal of Brown as he lay face down after being shot fatally by officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri last year. Brown died on August 9, but Wilson was not charged.

Also featured in the exhibit is an African American statue of liberty and a noose dangling from a neon sign.

“I Can’t Breath” reads a plaque hanging over the display, referencing the death of Eric Garner earlier this year.

As you may recall, Garner uttered these words just before officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in what has been described as a “chokehold” for about 15 to 19 seconds. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office attributed Garner’s death to a combination of a chokehold, compression of his chest, and poor health.

As for the artist behind the exhibit, according to station Fox2now (St. Louis), she is an unnamed New Orleans-based white female “…whose hope is that her piece will showcase the true cost of white privilege and and how it negatively affects the Black community in America.”

As you can imagine, the art piece has received it’s fair share of backlash. “I’m beginning to be ashamed to be an American.” wrote one Facebook user. “When are they opening the exhibit of him (Brown) robbing the store owner and assaulting Darren Wilson?” wrote another. “

Despite the backlash, it appears that the exhibit, pictured above, will run through August 10th. What are your thoughts on the piece? Sound off in the comment section below.

DMX is no stranger to the legal system. He has been arrested several times, over the past decade.  The 44-year-old rapper was nabbed for failing to pay over $400,000 in child support just prior to his performance at the Masters of Ceremony show at New York City’s Radio Music Hall on Friday evening.

X’s child support arrest is the latest in a long list of run-ins with the law including charges of drug possession, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and weapons possession among others.

Did society fail Kalief Browder?

Is the justice system to corrupt or inadequacy to receive justice?

Recent federal investigations in cities across the United States, stated that many people are in jail, because they are unable to pay traffic citations. It makes many wonder why is the system so unfair?

In 2010 at the age of 16, Browder was arrested by police as a suspect in the robbery of a backpack from another teen, Browder was locked up at Rikers Island for three years, unable to raise the $10,000 needed for bail.

He was held on Rikers Island for more than 1,000 days. Browder insisted he did not commit the crime. He was held in solitary confinement for much of the time and tied his bedsheets into a noose in an attempt to kill himself. He endured countless beatings, not only from inmates but also from corrections officers. The abuse was not only physical but also mental and emotional as he spent at least 400 days in solitary confinement.

“So when you see people and you see some of this anger at people in the streets and you’re like, ‘Why are they so unhappy?’ Think about Kalief Browder and think about how his friends must feel about American justice, how his parents must feel and about how his community feels” Rand Paul

After a long bout with depression and emotional trauma, Browder committed suicide this past weekend.

Four local Atlanta attorneys in Ferguson, Missouri to act as legal observers for the ongoing protests involving the death of Michael Brown where one attorney videos the unlawful arrest of a National Lawyers Guild Attorney.  Activist Attorney Mawuli Mel Davis organized the trip to Ferguson in response to the National Conference of Black Lawyers request to lawyers from around the country go to Ferguson to work with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) to observe and ensure protesters’ constitutional rights are not being infringed on by the militarized police forces and national guard. While the team, attorneys Mawuli Mel Davis, Jessica Robinson, Ecleynne Mercy and Shawn McCullers were observing demonstrations, Attorney Mawuli Mel Davis video records the unlawful arrest of a member of the National Lawyers Guild.

“This is a video of a National Lawyers Guild lawyer being arrested is the very reason we are here in Ferguson. He did nothing.  He was standing next to us filming an arrest and was suddenly pointed out, pushed, then arrested. The human and civil rights violations here in Ferguson are deeply disturbing.”, states Activist Attorney Mawuli Mel Davis of the Davis Bozeman law firm and member of the National Conference of Black Lawyers

The team of attorneys volunteered to be legal observers.  Their hope is to inspire other attorneys to go to Ferguson to be trained as legal observers by the NLG and to observe at least one night and day of demonstrations.

Attorney Davis has routinely organized lawyers in the Atlanta area to represent nonviolent protesters involved in civil disobedience, including organizing nearly 30 lawyers after the mass arrests of members of the Occupy Atlanta Movement. Houston Carnival Marked with Violence

Picture-3 The annual Houston Caribbean Carnival has grown into one of the nations most attended multicultural festivals during the summer.  The event traditionally takes place during the fourth of July weekend. This year’s festivities was marked with tragedy as revelers attending the annual Jouvert (Paint,Mud,and Water) fete, was abruptly interrupted by gunfire, which left party goers scrambling for cover. Four men are injured, two women were trampled in the meele trying to leave the scene, the shooter is still at large. Many Caribbean festivals are safe, especially in the Southern states, such as Atlanta and Miami. However, this year’s surrounding events did not have  adequate security, which created the opportunity for this tragic turn of events. There’s no real idea of what went wrong last night, how someone was allowed to bring a gun inside of a venue that held 5,000 people trying to party on the Fourth of July. There are reports of their being outside security and off-duty police officers but none of the 30 or so that were hired were inside the venue when the shooting took place.

Georgia’s Baby Bou Bou in Rehab

b4 b2

Bounkham “Baby Bou Bou” Phonesavanh, the baby severely injured by a flash bang grenade thrown in his play pen by the Habersham Sheriff’s Department and City of Cornelia police raid, has been transferred to Children’s Scottish Rite Hospital to begin rehabilitation. The family, who was set to move back home to Wisconsin the day after the raid, continues to need financial support as they have been living in a hotel to remain closer to their son.

“I was able to hold my son and hear his voice for the first time since the grenade exploded. After all that has happened to him, I am amazed at his strength. He has a long way to go but our prayers are being answered. We feel like it’s a miracle.” Bounkham Phonesavanh, Father of Baby Bou Bou.

All donations to the family can be made to a Wells Fargo Bank Trust account in the name of Bounkham Phonesavanh. Online donations be made at www.justiceandprayersforboubou.org

“ While this family is focused on the rehabilitation of their 19 month old baby, the ACLU has lent their support releasing a report on S.W.A.T. teams and the militarization of police which includes Baby Bou Bou’s mother, Alecia Phonesavanh’s chilling story about what happen the day the grenade blew a hole in their son’s face and chest. This family could be any of us.” Attorney Mawuli Mel Davis, Davis Bozeman Law Firm

MADD FACTOR: Why did the  Habersham Sheriff’s Department and City of Cornelia Police feel it so important to raid a home with children toys outside and visible? Lack of Judgement!   It’s amazing that law enforcement creates an excuse for the unprofessional work in this case, and poor judgement of it’s officers. Please support this effort through the links provided, as justice for Baby Bou Bou is right around the corner!

Gangsta Jermey Meeks set to make 30K a month

Blaze Modelz tells TMZ … “gangster models” are hot right now.  The agency claims they can book Meeks with high-end fashion houses — like Versace and Armani — and he could rake in $15 – $30K a month.

Blaze also says they actually like Meeks’ face tattoos … even the gang-revealing teardrop.  They thinks it’s edgy and sexy.  They didn’t mention the Crip tattoo on his neck, but that can be covered.

Another modeling agency — that did not want to be named — tells us … once Meeks is a free man they’d like to work with him as well.

Here’s the problem.  Meeks is currently being held on $900,000 bail with no prospect of getting out soon.  He’s a convicted criminal facing serious weapons charges and could be a little long in the tooth before he gets sprung.

Will and Jada Smith Child Protective Services Update

After a month of scrutiny and controversy, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been cleared by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. According to Radar Online, the superstar couple won’t be facing any charges following the public fallout from a photo of their daughter.

In April, the Smith’s 13-year-old daughter, Willow, was featured in a photo lying across a bed with shirtless 20-year-old actor, Moises Arias.

A backlash immediately followed after Arias posted the image on Instagram. Someone reportedly notified DCFS concerning “the welfare and safety of Willow, based on the contents of the photo”; and the agency soon announced its investigation.

But DCFS reportedly found no wrongdoing or danger to the teen.

“”No evidence presented that Willow has ever been in any danger around Moises or that she has ever been physically or emotionally abused,” a spokesperson for DCFS told Radar Online.

DCFS did, however, recommend that Will and Jada monitor their children’s social media accounts more closely.

Texas Teens Facing 1,000 years for Rape

Bottom row (from left): Da’Juan Oshea Degrate, 18; Douglas Demond Canada, 19; Cory Darnell Hall, 18

A high school girl thought she was going to play hookie from school with just one male friend. What transpired was a violent nightmare that forever changed her life.

Five high school boys in Texas and one 20-year-old are staring at life in prison for reportedly gang-raping a 15-year-old girl who was duped into being alone with them.

The males were reportedly indicted on a total of 91 counts. If convicted on all charges, the young males could be sentenced to 1,300 years each in prison, eliminating the possibility of ever tasting freedom again.

According to the Waco Tribune, on April 23, Douglas Canada,19, and Da’Juan Degrate, 18, convinced the 15-year-old girl to cut school at Waco High School. The girl agreed to hang with her classmates at a home. But to her horror, when she arrived at the house, she found out there were four other men where also inside.

Canada went first. He allegedly took the girl to a restroom and raped her. The girl told police that after Canada finished, the other males took turns having sex with her in a bedroom.

The four men who were at the home waiting for the young girl to arrive included Devoric Javon Evans, 20; Lamont Tray Davis, 19; Day’tron Derrell Smith, 18; and Cory Darnell Hall, 18.

After the six were finished with the victim, Davis drove the girl back to her high school. She immediately reported the sexual assaults and was taken to a hospital to have a rape kit performed. Canada faces a maximum of 1,360 years in prison while the others face 1,340 years in prison.

The men are now entangled even further than the counts of rape because of a Texas law known as “acting in concert.” It makes every person at the scene of a crime responsible for the crime committed even if they took little or no part in it.

Woman Has Sex with 3 Boys Under 10

Earlier this week in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the boyfriend of Anne Elizabeth Doubler, 30, discovered that his girlfriend was cheating on him. The boyfriend returned home with their 4-year-old son and found Doubler completely naked and not alone. In fact, Doubler had at least three sex partners whose ages were 5, 7 and 10. When the boys were discovered, they ran from the scene, leaving Doubler to deal with her boyfriend.

The boyfriend questioned her and she admitted that the kids were from nearby apartments. Her boyfriend then picked up the phone and called police. Now Doubler is facing multiple charges of rape, sexual contact with a child, and sexual exploitation of a minor.

Sioux Falls police spokesman Sam Clemens said, “This is something we don’t see very often. When we’re talking about multiple victims, especially at one time, that’s unusual.”

Clemens went on to state that they are continuing the investigation and that there may have been more juveniles involved. If convicted of these crimes, Doubler is facing life in prison. She is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.

Woman rips off BP for $900,000

Crystal Lani Kitt was the alleged ringleader in a massive criminal enterprise, according to law enforcement. She is allegedly responsible for stealing $900,000 in fraudulent emergency aid involving the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Kitt allegedly had even involved her mother and daughter on the scheme. Her mother, Laticha Louise Kitt, pleaded guilty to criminal charges and last month received a sentence of five years’ probation, including four months of home confinement. U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade also ordered her to pay back $30,000 she received.

The spill caused billions of dollars in environmental and economic losses for Gulf Coast residents and businesses. Kitt was able to scam the system by filing more than 100 claims using stolen identities against the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which BP created to compensate residents and businesses. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the region, it may be the biggest fraudulent claim by one person related to the BP spill.

Kitt was computer literate and was able to produce fake pay stubs for use in claiming lost wages for various businesses in the Mobile, Alabama, area using fake identities. Kitt was easy to catch because she deposited all the checks received into her personal bank account, even though the checks were not made out to her. She is now facing conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud charges.

Chris Brown Arrested After Failing to Stay in Rehab

According to reports, Chris Brown was picked up by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department earlier today after he was kicked out of anger management rehab for the second time.  It’s unclear of what exactly he did but it did not involve violence or drugs this time around.  It has been said that he had an inappropriate relationship with a female employee at the facility earlier this month (which could be the reason for his breakup with his ex girl friend Karrueche) however, that is not why he was thrown out today.

From LA Times:

The singer was taken to the inmate reception center in downtown Los Angeles, where he was being booked into jail, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker said.

He was arrested in Malibu without incident, Parker said. No details were immediately available about what led to his arrest.

Brown is on probation for his 2009 conviction in the assault.

In November, the singer was ordered to a 90-day live-in anger-management treatment program, where he would have to complete three eight-hour days of community service each week and undergo periodic drug tests.

Prosecutors in February asked a judge to take Brown into custody for failing to live up to a probation requirement that he “obey all laws.”
