Michael Jackson’s estate has agreed to sell it’s remaining stake in a lucrative music catalog to Sony Corp. for $750 million, the entities announced Monday.

The catalog included publishing for major names such as Beyonce, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and others.

via USA Today:

The agreement for Jackson’s half-share of the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog will give the company sole ownership of works by The Beatles, Bob Dylan and other hit making musicians, including Eminem and Taylor Swift.

The deal is another posthumous blockbuster deal for Jackson, whose estate has erased the singer’s massive debts through a mixture of new music and movie ventures and re-releases of the singer’s most popular music. Jackson’s estate benefits his mother and three children, known as Prince, Paris and Blanket.

“This agreement further demonstrates Sony’s commitment to the entertainment businesses and our firm belief that these businesses will continue to contribute to our success for years to come,” Sony Corp. president and CEO Kazuo Hirai wrote in a statement.

The sale does not include rights to Jackson’s master recordings or songs that he wrote, and the singer’s estate will continue to have a stake in EMI Publishing, Inc.

“This transaction further allows us to continue our efforts of maximizing the value of Michael’s Estate for the benefit of his children,” the co-executors of Jackson’s estate, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, wrote in a statement. “It also further validates Michael’s foresight and genius in investing in music publishing.”

Jackson purchased the ATV portion of the catalog in 1985 for $41.5 million, and he later merged it with Sony. It remained his most lucrative asset at the time of his death in June 2009 at age 50, though by that point Jackson was hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

The deal for Jackson’s half of the Sony/ATV catalog is expected to close by the end of March.

We are not sure why the Estate ran by Michael’s mother sold the lucrative catalog, however that was a smart move by Michael to invest in publishing.

Rihanna’s earnings fall by 50 percent, says Forbes

Rihanna’s earnings fall 50 per cent

Barbadian superstar Rihanna ranks No. 10 on Forbes’ annual list of the top-earning women in music. Rihanna, who is 27, earned US$26 million in 2015, about half of what she earned last year, placing her at the No. 10 spot on the list.

Citing the reasons for Rihanna’s lower earnings, Forbes said that after seven albums in eight years through 2012, Rihanna has gone quite some time without a full-length release, and she only played nine dates during the magazine’s scoring period, which by the way, runs from the middle of 2014 to the middle of 2015 —resulting in a lower-than-usual finish on the top earners’ list.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry is No. 1 on Forbes’ 2015 list of the highest earning women in music.

Thanks to her Prismatic World Tour, which included 126 shows during Forbes’ scoring period, and deals with Coty, Claire’s and CoverGirl, Perry, 31, earned an estimated US$135 million from June 1, 2014, to June 1, 2015, to clinch the No. 1 spot, the financial magazine said.

In the No. 2 position is Taylor Swift, 25, who earned an estimated US$80 million following the launch of her widely successful pop album “1989” in October 2014, which has sold more than 3.6 million copies to date.

The iconic five-member band Fleetwood Mac is in third position, qualifying because they have two female members, Stevie Nicks and the returning Christine McVie. The band earned an estimated US$59.5 million, mainly from touring, clinching the No. 3 spot on the list, Forbes said.

Lady Gaga landed in the No. 4 spot with US$59 million, comprised of her 66 shows during the scoring period and deals with fashion house Versace, Mac cosmetics and profits from her Fame fragrance.

And rounding out the top five is Beyonce with US$54.5 million, courtesy of her On the Run Tour with hubby Jay Z. That tour grossed over $100 million during 19 show show dates in North America.
