Bryon Allen Wins Suit Against AT&T

Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios has secured distribution for its seven cable channels acrossDirecTV and U-verse now that AT&T has settled a racial discrimination lawsuit filed in December 2014.

The lawsuit couldn’t have come at a worse time for the companies as they were, at the time, awaiting government approval for an unprecedented merger.

Allen’s suit, filed last December by his Entertainment Studios and the National Association of African American Owned Media, alleged that the companies discriminated against and carried too few minority-owned networks, specifically networks with 100 percent Black ownership.

DirecTV began carriage of Entertainment Studios’ Comedy.TV and Justice Central.TV on Monday. U-verse has added Comedy.TV, Recipe.TV, ES.TV, MyDestination.TV, Cars TV and Pets TV; U-verse already carried Justice Central.TV.

Of the lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles, reps for Entertainment Studios and AT&T would only say: “The matter has been resolved.”

The AT&T deal greatly enhances the distribution base and value of the lifestyle and entertainment channels, which are wholly owned by Allen, a comedian turned entrepreneur. DirecTV and U-verse together reach nearly 26 million domestic subscribers, with U-verse accounting for about 6 million subscribers..

Allen’s complaint blasted AT&T for having no carriage agreements with “100% African-American-owned media companies.” It made a provocative reference to what it called the practice of African-American celebrities posing as “fronts” for channels owned by “white-owned media,” without naming names.

The complaint also took a swipe at the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the NAACP and National Urban League, claiming AT&T was “paying off” civil rights orgs to secure their endorsement of the AT&T-DirecTV merger.

Kardashain Clan Named As America’s First Family On Cosmo Cover

Move over, Obama’s…There’s a new “First Family” coming to the White House. It seems that there’s another “First Family” taking up space in America’s cultural landscape and their names start with K.

families-550x424 (1)

The Kardashians controversial Cosmopolitan magazine’s November cover under the headline “America’s First Family,” causing outrage on Twitter and among editors of black and multicultural media and websites.

But the magazine, celebrating its 50th anniversary, says calm down: The cover is just a “teasing” way to describe the Kardashians as the “huge cultural phenomenon” that they are.

But to some on Twitter, the cover seemed to be deliberate belittling of the real First Family — the nation’s first African-American First Family: President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, and their daughters Malia and Sasha.

If  Kanye West, succeeds in his quest to add POTUS to his resume in 2020, they may be in the white house sooner than we think…..

Empire Ratings Tumble by 20 Percent

empiretv_s2e2_12After returning to near-record ratings a week ago, “Empire” on Wednesday night finally succumbed to the gravitational pull that asserts its influence over all broadcast TV shows. The second installment of Fox’s hip-hopera took a bit of a tumble, shedding approximately 2.5 million viewers and dropping nearly 20% of its premiere-episode adults 18-to-49.

According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, “Empire” averaged a 5.5 in the all-important demo, which marked an 18% drop from the preliminary 6.7 notched by the season premiere.

For what it’s worth, most shows tend to drop between 15% and 20% between their first and second broadcasts. Some of those lost deliveries may be recaptured by time-shifting, but the only views likely to have an impact on ratings guarantees are in VOD or other streaming platforms that do not allow for skipping commercials.

While the “Empire” slippage is almost wholly irrelevant — its nearest competitor, ABC’s “Modern Family,” managed to eke out a 3.0 in the dollar demo — it does put an end to any talk that the show might repeat its unprecedented growth streak of a year ago. Since the Nielsen People Meters era began in 1991, no broadcast TV show had ever demonstrated uninterrupted weekly ratings growth… until “Empire” began subverting the laws of physics last winter.

Is Fox’s Empire to Real Life Messy?

Photo: FoxTV
Photo: FoxTV

The success of the Fox hit show Empire has exploded into modeling, music, and fashion deals for the cast of the hit show. Fox’s breakout drama drew 16.2 million viewers to its season two premiere, crushed every other program on Wednesday night, and, more importantly to the network, averaged a massive 6.7 rating among adult viewers 19-49, reports Nielsen. That’s up 81 percent from the show’s series premiere last January, and down just slightly from the show’s all-time high.

The show’s success is currently being over shadowed by the real life drama surrounding the scripted comments about celebrities like 50 cents and Donnie McClurkin.   Continue reading “Is Fox’s Empire to Real Life Messy?”

Sesame Street moves to HBO

We cant believe it. So its Not So!

“Sesame Street” is moving — and it will be brought to you by the letters H, B and O.

The next season of the long-running public television show is singing and skipping its way to the premium cable network in a five-year deal announced Thursday. Episodes of the children’s classic will also be shortened from one hour to a half-hour.

But fans of “Sesame Street” accustomed to watching it on PBS for the past 45 years won’t be without their beloved Big Bird. As part of the deal, the show’s older episodes will continue to air on public television — reedited in new ways — and then after nine months, the HBO episodes will begin airing on PBS and its member stations.

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit that produces the show, said it will even increase the number of episodes it produces, from 18 per year to 35, and create a “Sesame Street” spin-off about the Muppets.
