Black Friday deals brought mayhem to malls, with at least two fatal shootings reported across the country, including one at a New Jersey shopping complex that left an Atlantic City man dead.
The New Jersey shooting took place about 1 a.m. in the parking lot outside a Macy’s store at the Hamilton Mall in Atlantic County, officials said.
Demond Cottman, 21, of Atlantic City, died at the scene after being shot multiple times.
His brother, Shadi Cottman, 26, of Clayton, was shot in the leg and listed in stable condition at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.
Officials didn’t immediately say what sparked the shooting, which occurred as people were lined up outside the mall.
Mall-goers lamented the man’s death — but said the shopping must go on.
“Anytime someone loses their life, it’s very traumatic, especially on a holiday,” said Christina Tabarrini, 44. “It doesn’t prevent me from shopping. We’ve just become pretty numb to the fact that there are shootings that go on.”
In Reno, Nev., a 33-year-old Walmart customer was gunned down during a fight over a parking spot just after doors were opened on Thanksgiving night.
The victim, who was also armed, was shot in the driveway leaving the Walmart at about 6:05 p.m. Police have not made any arrests, but said those involved in the shooting were located.
Meanwhile, in Memphis, Tenn., a man was shot about 11:15 p.m. Thursday outside the Wolfchase Galleria Mall while shoppers were taking part in early Black Friday sales, WREG-TV reported.
Three people were taken into custody.
There have been seven deaths and 98 injuries during Black Friday shopping between 2006 and 2014, according to BlackFriday.
